These photos were all taken using the Canon 650D, on a tripod, from the bedroom window!  The shutter was set on “B” and controlled with the Intervalometer.  This allowed me to open the shutter and wait until a lightning flash happened, then shut the shutter.  All of these pictures are a single lightning flash event.  There is no stacking of images or events!

I started with the aperture on 5.6, because obviously I need the widest apertures to capture as much light as possible.  But when I reviewed the images on the camera, there was apparently way too much light.  So I worked my way up through f8, f14 and ended up on f16.  The previews looked much better on the camera at f16.

However, when I previewed them in Lightroom, it was clear that the f16 and even the f14 did not have enough light to show the detail.  It ended up with the f8 shots being the best, after I had turned down the exposure and dehazed them in Lightroom.

What do you think?

f8 image, exposure reduced and dehazed in Lightroom
f8 image, exposure reduced and dehazed in Lightroom
f8 image, exposure reduced and dehazed in Lightroom
f14 image with almost no adjustment in Lightroom.. It is OK, but there is a lot more detail in there that would have better imaged better at f8
f16 image with almost no adjustment in Lightroom.. It is OK, but there is a lot more detail in there that would have better imaged better at f8
